Twitter’s funniest princess: how Carrie Fisher ruled the internet

There’s something horribly sad about reading through the Twitter timeline of a famous person after their death; doing so feels both heartbreaking, and a little morbid.

In the case of Carrie Fisher, however, the strangeness of reading things a dead person wrote while very much alive is undercut by frequent laughter.

While many people are funny, vivid and charismatic in “real life”, not all  such people “translate” to the internet. But Fisher did so effortlessly.

Perhaps it was because she was a writer – her first book, the semi-autobiographical novel Postcards from the Edge, was published in 1987; her last, the memoir The Princess Diarist, was released this year – but her sense of humour, spot-on, often caustic observations and natural eccentricity made her the perfect “internet” celebrity.

She connected directly with her ardent admirers, and relished in the title, bestowed upon her by her fanbase, of “space mom”.

Online, as in life, she was warm, witty, outspoken impulsive … and usually accompanied by her dog Gary (a bona fide internet celebrity, of course, in his own furry right).

Here are some of our favourite Carrie Online moments:

When she summed up how we all feel about the Star Wars “canon”, and what falls (and doesn’t fall) into it:

Joel Embiid Uses Funny Tweet To Garner NBA All-Star Game Fan Votes

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid really wants your vote for the 2017 NBA All-Star in New Orleans. It all started with a tweet from Aug. 2014, which he quote tweeted Wednesday hoping to garner some support in the fan voting portion of the All-Star Game. Not just in the hopes of playing in the game, but potentially impressing a love interest as well.
Embiid’s tweet probably will help him in the fan vote, but he doesn’t really need the boost. He’s already having an All-Star caliber season by averaging 18.7 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game for the 76ers. The 22-year-old center is the front-runner for Rookie of the Year. Embiid, if selected, would be the first 76ers All-Star since Jrue Holliday in 2012-13.

Music in 2017: Katy Perry, Drake and Ed Sheeran prepare new albums

After Craig David, All Saints and Rick Astley staged unexpected comebacks this year, who’s next? Samantha Mumba? DJ Pied Piper? Jive Bunny?

Let’s hope not. Instead, here’s some music we can look forward to.

Fresh from allegedly being punctured by the sixth in line to the throne, Ed Sheeran has completed work on his as-yet-untitled third album.

Little is known about the record, but the star recently registered several songs with his publisher, with titles like 21st Century Fox, Sure and Fall.

The latter was co-written with Amy Wadge, who helped him out on the chart-busting ballad Thinking Out Loud. She told Newsbeat the new material would “break the internet“, so if your email gets hacked, blame Ed.

Also in the studio is Katy Perry, who ditched half of her fourth album so she could write songs about Donald Trump’s US election victory.

“It’s funny, sometimes people who disagree with me just say, ‘Shut up and sing,'” she wrote earlier this month. “Boy, will I do so in a whole new way… next year. Hell hath no fury like a woman REBORN.”

These coal country voters backed Trump. Now they’re worried about losing Obamacare.

Last night, CNN aired a terrific segment on people from coal country who voted for Donald Trump — but are now worried that his vow to repeal Obamacare will deprive them of crucial protections that enable them to stay afloat financially. This dovetails with other reporting that suggests a lot of Trump voters may be harmed by repeal of the law.

Which raises a question: Did voters such as these know they were voting for this? After all, Trump promised countless times throughout the campaign to repeal the Affordable Care Act, didn’t he? If they are complaining about this now, don’t they have only themselves to blame?

No. I’m going to argue that, while Trump did repeatedly vow repeal, these voters were absolutely right to conclude that he would not leave them without the sort of federal protections they enjoy under Obamacare. That’s because Trump did, in fact, clearly signal to them that this would not happen.

Al Franken Faces Donald Trump and the Next Four Years

Donald Trump never laughs,” Al Franken said.  This was the senator’s first observation to me on a recent afternoon. It was exactly three weeks from the day the punch line became the president-elect. And Trump’s mysterious absence of laughter had never occurred to me before, even though I’d spoken to him a fair amount and he has lived pretty much nonstop in our faces for 18 months, no end in sight.

New York Today: Where to Ski Near the City

Good morning on this winter-ready Thursday.

While the city has yet to see its first significant snow of this autumn, ski and snowboard season is well underway across New York’s 51 ski resorts and just outside the state’s borders.

Elaine Glusac, who writes about ski travel for The New York Times, told us about some of the best places for New Yorkers to hit the slopes without having to set foot on an airplane or drive a car.

So grab your goggles, buckle your boots and heat up those hand warmers.

Whiteface Mountain, Lake Placid, N.Y.

“As a former Olympic venue, Whiteface Mountain is a bucket-list place for skiers with respect for history,” Ms. Glusac told us.

Hours from the city: 5

How to get there: By bus, take Adirondack Trailways. By train, take Amtrak to Westport, N.Y., about 40 miles from Lake Placid, and then hop on a scheduled shuttle. More transit information here.

One great date: This Sunday, when you can ski for free if you are dressed as Santa Claus or Mrs. Claus.

Twitter accidentally killed @ names in replies on iOS today

If you use the official Twitter iOS app, you may have noticed something missing today: @username handles in replies. I wasn’t a fan of the reworked style when it popped up on my Android device recently, and neither were many of the people affected by the change today. The one upside however, was that since @names no longer applied to the character count, some users created a massive “Twitter canoe” mentioning everyone they could. Anyway, it has now reverted back to normal for all users, and in a tweet, the company explained: “an experiment around replies accidentally went out to everyone on iOS briefly.”

One stop home for gardening solutions

When Cyclone Hudhud flattened 350 plants at Ravipati Kumuda’s residence two years ago, she felt helpless that she could save only one of them.

Though it took quite a while for her to come to terms with the loss, she breathed life into her entrepreneurial skills by launching ‘Green Twigs’.

With an initial capital investment of just Rs. 5,000, she gave wings to her plant retail venture that provides a one-stop solution to gardening and landscaping needs. Today, her home-cum-green world is a place where over 2,000 ornamental, medicinal and flowering plants have been housed.
